Solar Panels

As our society becomes more conscious of our carbon footprint, one thing you might consider is adding solar panels to your home. Very often these panels can be concealed by adding them to the rear or sides of the home, making them out of view from the road. Solar panels can also drastically reduce your electric usage, lowering that ever-rising electric bill.

By adding a battery to your solar panel system, you can also have a clean, back up solution in the event of a power outage or to avoid potential peak-hour usage charges by your electric company.

Studies have also shown that solar panels increase the value of your home. One recent study, presented by Zillow, estimated that adding solar panels will increase the value of your home by as much as 4.1%!

Maturing in Place Living

One of the many nice things about building a brand new custom home is that you can tailor your home to accommodate your needs as you grow older. After all, few people want to move when they finally hit the age of maturity!

A one story plan is often the right choice for the older population. But if your heart is set on a two story, consider having the Master Bedroom on the first floor.  Or, if you’d prefer the Master Bedroom upstairs (perhaps with the kids while they are young), consider at least having a full bathroom on the first floor. You can always convert an Office, Multi-Use Room, etc., into a bedroom in the future.

Other good ideas to consider are wider hallways, 3’ doorways, zero-threshold showers, taller toilets, taller vanities, and grab bars. You might also want to consider minimizing the amount of steps to the house as well as in the house.

Garage Space

As most guys will say, you can never have too much garage space. Obviously you’re going to want to keep your cars in the garage to protect against the weather, but there are several other reasons for a larger garage as well.

Remember that you are going to have other items that you will want to easily access—like bikes, lawn mowers, yard tools, trash cans, recycling bins, etc. And if you are a handy person, the garage is a great place to keep your tools if you have the space.

Our garages tend to be larger than most builders, but extra space can’t ever hurt. Even adding 2’-4’ can make a huge difference. This extra space is often the perfect place for garage cabinets, work tables, etc.
